Nelson School About

Nelson School is a small rural school with an enrollment of 59 students in grades K-5. The school excels in creating a strong, close-knit community through purposeful, multi-grade opportunities for connection. The 2024-2025 school year marks 12 years of the schools serving students from both Nelson and Sullivan. Since that time, both communities have worked collaboratively to support the Nelson Elementary School. With our March 2018 expansion, the school has facilities to serve both communities for the foreseeable future.

In addition to academic subjects, Nelson offers music, art, physical education, Spanish, and instrumental lessons for students in Grades 4 and 5. Our students are supported by Title I services in reading and math, a special education teacher, tutors, a school counselor, a speech therapist, a school psychologist, and a school nurse. We are committed to creating learning opportunities in all contexts, and this past year has seen the implementation of Woods Recess on Fridays, where students get to play and explore our natural environment. We continue to enjoy our long-standing relationship with The Harris Center, with each teacher collaborating with our naturalist to provide a series of nature education classes.

The efforts of the staff to establish a productive and nurturing learning environment for children are greatly aided by strong community involvement and support. Nelson School is a place where there is a strong emphasis on skill development, where there is excitement about learning, where there are high and clear expectations for performance, and where all children are challenged to reach their full potential.
