Well, there’s no beating around the bush this week. There is a great deal of work ahead of our schools and districts as we prepare for the return to onsite teaching and learning five days per week for all of our buildings.
As you know from previous updates, all of our schools have already been working toward that goal. We have brought schools or grade levels in schools back for more than 2 days in person in a manner that was calculated and planned in order to maintain the safety protocols that have proven to be effective across all of our buildings. We will continue with that effort and will release more detailed information as it becomes finalized.
Make no mistake about it, this will be a tremendous effort by everyone involved in order for it to be as successful as possible. There are many moving parts and details that will need to be addressed along the way that our staff will be working through over the next couple of weeks. It’s not as simple as just saying let’s do it, it is much more involved than that and I believe that both our staff and our community recognize how complicated it can be for the most part.
I have requested that we be allowed to make this transition when we return from the April break. This will afford us the ability to overcome many of the challenges that are before us now, most notably, the instructional shift for our teachers while they continue the day-to-day instruction of our students. It will also provide us with better timelines to communicate with our school communities, relocate several hundred pieces of furniture and equipment, and work through all of our procedures as they apply throughout the school day.
However, as with previously demonstrated efforts, I am confident that we will get there. We have extremely good people working throughout our districts that want and desire the best outcomes for everyone. And as we work through finer details in getting our students back into the buildings five days per week, we are 100% committed to doing so as successfully as possible.
As with many other efforts that we have unrolled in the past, I want to recognize that this one will likely be similar in that not everyone will agree with everything. There will undoubtedly be those that think things should be done one way and those that think they should be done another way. The “what ifs” will inevitably rise to the surface once again and the countless scenarios will be played out in the minds of many in our school communities.
Will it be absolutely perfect for the roughly 5,000 students and staff throughout all seven of our districts? I believe we all know better. But, it will be the absolute best that we are able to do with the resources we have available. And, we will commit to improving in areas that can be improved upon along the way. Like I stated earlier, we all want the best outcomes and will continue to work toward that end.
Please stay tuned for further updates. I will apologize upfront for what may result in information overload. However, we will send information out through as many avenues as possible so that it can be available for everyone. I humbly ask that you are patient with us as we prepare this information. We may not have all of the answers that everyone is looking for specifically at the time they are looking for them. Please trust that we are working to provide those answers and will respond as soon as we possibly can.
Shifting gears, I have received requests to extend the student challenge a little longer. Folks that would have liked to participate were unable to do so for a number of reasons. That said, I’ve extended the challenge until the end of the April break. Please see the details below in the update.
In the meantime, I ask that you reach out to your child(ren)’s teacher(s), counselor(s) and principal(s) with any questions or concerns you may have at this time. Be on the lookout for additional information as it becomes finalized from both my office and from individual schools as well.
Student Challenge: This challenge is to create a very short (less than 15 seconds) video clip completing one of the following prompts:
“________ School is the best school because _______” or
“I love _________ School because ________.”
Tell us what makes your school awesome and unique. What is it that you like the most about your school? I don’t want to steer any responses as they really ought to be organic from our student’s perspective, but last spring, I issued a challenge asking students to tell us what they missed the most about school while we were fully remote. Those responses were amazing and I’m confident these responses will be equally amazing.

COVID-19 Data: Providing all of the COVID-19 data that we have been tracking since the onset of the pandemic back in March, 2020.
Confirmed COVID-19 Positives that our school personnel are aware of from the beginning of school year 2020-2021 (numbers from 1-4 will be suppressed to help protect individual privacy). These are aggregated so that it does not identify either student or staff and provided in both the most recent weekly totals as well as the totals for the entire school year.
District Meetings Information:
E-Flyer Distribution Program: As a reminder, there are many flyers that our schools are asked to send home throughout the school year. We also post these flyers on our website and it can be found by going to this E-Flyer Distribution Program embedded link.
Every student in SAU 29 and all children 18 and under are eligible for free meals through June 2021. Meals for all students in SAU 29 are free at this time. Students are eligible for up to 7 days’ worth of meals per week, remote meals and/or in-school dining depending on the modality of their instruction.
Please read carefully as schools have a variety of learning plans.
- Students attending school fully remote with 5 remote days per week will receive 7 days worth of meals.
- Students attending school in person 2 days a week with 3 remote days per week will receive 5 days worth of meals.
- Students attending school in person 4 days a week with 1 remote day per week will receive 3 days worth of meals.
- Students attending school in person 5 days a week with 0 remote days per week will receive 2 days worth of meals.
- Students not enrolled in public school may receive 7 days worth of meals.
Please do not sign up under a parent name, use your student’s name only.

Please submit your order for the following week's meals no later than 7:00am Friday, April 9th. You will receive an email confirmation after placing your order. This form is to order meals for remote pick up on Tuesday, April 13th and Friday, April 16th.

Screening Assessment: Please continue to complete the screening assessment each school day. This allows our school nurses to continue to monitor and provide support with regard to the health of the school community. Please note that we are not requesting that this be done on the weekends, holidays or breaks, only on days that school would typically be in session.
Special Education: The needs of students with disabilities are enormously important. As always, your first point of contact is your child’s special education teacher or building principal. Please if you have not already picked up your students Chromebook for the 1:1 program we need you to print and sign the agreement HERE. We can not release the Chromebook to your student until we get a signed agreement. Please send the agreement in with your student.
Parents and Students, Chromebooks should be used for your school work only. Please do not eat while using your school issued Chromebook. We are experiencing high volumes of damaged Chromebooks due to spills. Please make sure you fill in the online registration for your students. It is important to have all the correct information in place.
